Me, too. They should only do that to black people. They are horrible tippers. (Sorry, may be racist, but totally TRUE. AND they want a hookup every time. Black people always ask for free salad bar.)
This brings up an interesting point -the stereotype of tipping. I have seen several studies that generally say females are the worst tippers. With that in mind, I tend to tip more generously than the average consumer, because I want to break the stereotype.
In "fine dining" my tip is definitely tied to the level of service received. If the service meets my overall expectation of the dining experience, I will tip as close to 20% as possible considering rounding. I only round-up if the service was exceptional.
In small, local places, where the price of the meal is usually inexpensive but the service is great, I tip more generously (over 20%), because I want to help the local business stay in business. In this case I generally "round up" from 20%.
I chain places, I tip according to the service received. If the service is more than "good"...just that extra step, I will tip more than 20% with rounding up to the next full $. If the service is bad, don't expect more than 10% from me.
OT a bit: Cracker, I believe that laughter is a perfect medicine and you definitely help me break into a nice strong laugh almost every day! Yes I am being sincere here. I just wish you would change your avatar back to the mean guy.
