Sgt. Noel Ramirez (30) and Deputy Taylor Lindsey (25) of the Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office were killed on Thursday. Ramirez was a husband and father of two young children and Lindsey had just gotten engaged.
Sheriff Schultz told reporters that the two officers were "men of integrity, men of loyalty....God-fearing men who loved what they did, and we are very proud of them." Rest in peace.
At first, the Sheriff said that the officers were shot in their parole car and attributed it to hatred of law enforcement. Then, he said they were shot through the window of a restaurant where they were eating.
Now, it's been confirmed they were eating in a restaurant when the shooter walked in, shot them, and then went to his car and killed himself and that the motive will probably never be known.
The killer, 59-year-old John Hubert Highnote, had no apparent previous contact with the slain officers. He was arrested in 1978 for weapons violations and twice in the 90s -- for domestic violence and criminal mischief. He had no recent criminal offenses.
