If it's ruled that he was killed while acting in the line of duty, his survivors will receive 100% of his annual salary per year in benefits, along with a lump sum amount and the free health-care and other benefits that go along with the survivor's pension (since Gliniewicz had served 30 years and was of retirement age when he died).
However, if it's determined that he instead committed suicide on the job, his survivors could get substantially less, like 50% of his salary and reduced accompanying benefits. If he also had separate Life Insurance and purchased the policy at least two years before his death, his survivors will get the payout under almost all policies even if it's ruled that he committed suicide. The 2-Year Suicide Clause is pretty standard across policies.
