I think it's newsworthy because it's a historic "first" (and the Senate will likely confirm the appointment without much resistance).
I agree that it's important to show progress on that front. Some people had a shit fit when Michael Sam kept being referred to as the first openly gay football player too. The people who have complained about those two things don't like it when someone is called "the first black" whatever either.
