THE 'WHO'S TO BLAME?' THREAD
#61
So when she told him to 'get back in' did she say that sarcastically because he's threatened to do it before? I might have said that too if my boyfriend kept telling me he was going to kill himself. Not that I'd actually want him to or believe he was really going to do it.

No, I don't think she's to blame for his death. I think she's guilty of being a sucky individual. I would think that of anyone who encouraged a suicide.

I don't know if she was calling his bluff as an attempt at reverse psychology or if she wanted him to be dead so she could get sympathy and attention, sally. He reportedly had a history of depression / suicidal thoughts and threats.

Police and prosecutors are attempting to prove the latter and hold Michelle responsible for Conrad's suicide (punishable by up to 20 years).

Joseph Cataldo, Michelle's attorney, says his client didn't commit a crime and he believes a judge will dismiss the charge prior to trial. He says that once all the evidence is made public it will be clear that Carter "counseled" Roy not to take his own life.

"I think it's rather suspect they didn't release all the other text messages they claim the two of them had... It's a sad story, a tragedy, but it's not manslaughter," Cataldo says. "What we have here is a young man who made a voluntary decision to end his own life. It was his voluntary decision. His death was not caused by Michelle Carter."

According to Cataldo, the case is unprecedented in the state of Massachusetts. He says he's not aware of any cases in the state "where a person who is 30 miles away is charged with committing manslaughter by text."

Massachusetts has no statute criminalizing assisted suicide, although 40 other states do. It can, however, prohibit it under common law.

I don't necessarily think its her fault, he was the weak fuck that decided to off his self.
I think she is responsible for Not contacting parents or authorities when she knew what he was doing.
Then again if someone is threatening to jump off a building and some asshole yells "JUMP" they are held responsible.
I have a hard time working up much sympathy for suicides, I been through all kinds shit and none of it was worth dieing over.
Lost a good woman to suicide, took her 3 or 4 tries but she finally got it done.
Weak bullshit, pissed me off

If I was dating a guy who kept telling me he was going to kill himself in some kind of attempt to get sympathy I might become annoyed and say well go ahead and do it then asshole. If he really went and did it I think it would be ridiculous to charge me with manslaughter.

Even if she was serious when she said that and actually assisted him with it through text I still don't know if she's to blame. She's a nasty little bitch though.

I was dragged to a Kmart or two in my youth.

I didn't go there to kill myself, but probably had a suicidal thought or two cross my mind watching my mom elbow other ladies to get to the blue light specials.

ETA: But, she almost always bought us I-CEEs on the way out, so life was good again.

hah Besides the obvious answer, a Kmart parking lot is a public place. Not exactly an ideal place to off one's self if you plan on getting the job done.

Depression, like many mental health disorders are misunderstood. This young man was not a "weak fuck." He apparently suffered from severe depression. When suicidal people try or say they are going to kill themselves, it is their way of asking for help. Never, ever, "egg" someone on to go ahead and kill yourself.....The bratty young lady should have stepped aside and called emergency services as she was in over her head regardless of her intentions. But, regardless of her taunts to go ahead and kill himself, he would have done it regardless at some point IMO. The depressed brain takes over and you can't see yourself ever getting out of the deep, dark hole you are in...life seems hopeless, you question your existence, your purpose. You can be rich, poor, have everything in the world going for you, but still suffer from this disease. It is not selfishness which causes people to "off" themselves, but a true deep seated depression which destroys your soul. Therapy and/or drugs can sometimes slow down the progress of the intended suicide, but according to some research, no amount of intervention will help a patient suffering from clinical depression. One of the students where I worked killed himself at home over the holidays. He had taken his girlfriend to meet his parents and they found him hanging in the bathroom....He was quiet but never gave anyone a clue about his inner self. He never wanted to participate in group where people felt comfortable (or not) sharing their feelings. He certainly never mentioned suicide. Some do, some don't...sorry to disagree, but don't think this is caused by any weakness, rather, a devastating disease which is often not diagnosed or misdiagnosed or just ignored. Depression also runs in families. I may have mentioned before that my brother was a patient for 2 years in a mental health facility (Menninger's)in Topeka, Kansas....

I wouldn't care how depressed I am I couldn't be that selfish to hurt my parents or children in that way. So to me it's weak. I can't imagine what it would do to my loved ones to find me hanging in the bathroom. Well besides for my husband, he might be happy about it.

The brain of a severely depressed person doesn't use logic or reasoning, e.g., that would really hurt everyone (except maybe my husband) and so, you are a selfish, weak individual. The severely depressed brain doesn't process information that way. The brain only recognizes deep despair and hopelessness, which overpowers willful action. For mild/moderate depression, the use of anti-depressants have been mostly successful. Some refer to a chemical imbalance and the medications help stabilize this imbalance...
*"you" in a general sense....

The thing is in a depressed brain, and people who I have talked to over the years, it makes sense for them. Even though it doesn't make sense, and that stage of suicidal ideation brain then goes onto even come up with a plan, which can lead to self harm or suicide. It's not normal, it's not a normal thinking pattern, that is why it is called a mental illness. When people are that unwell, and that ill, they justify doing it with all sorts of reasons, "my family don't need me" "they would be better off without me", or they are so unwell they can't even think of anyone elses feelings, they are so consumed with the depression. It is a dark place, those that are prone to the illness usually have help in place or know to present to the hospital and get help. Because it is not normal. I often think that it is those who are not aware of what mental illness is really that confuse that state with being a valid logical place. Those who have been ill before and survived usually know how to reach out. Having said that, does not mean they are not at risk of self harm or death.

My father committed suicide. I wish I had known then, what I know now.
