A Tibetan protester has been treated for severe burns after setting himself on fire in a demonstration before the Chinese president's visit to India.

The male protester sprinted through New Delhi today engulfed in flames as hundreds demonstrated against China's rule over Tibet.

Jamphel Yeshi carried out the self-immolation as he ran near the speakers at a rally near the Indian Parliament in the country's capital.

A man in Knoxville, Tennessee has committed suicide by setting himself on fire in front of his wife.

Michael D McReynolds, 61, was sitting at home with his wife Anna on 1402 Craig Road when he got up, fetched a canister of gasoline from the garage, went to the front yard, covered himself in fuel and set himself alight.

Dying before his wife could unfurl their water hose, Mr McReynold's suicide was described as a mystery by his widow as he had never indicated any suicidal feelings and said nothing as he went to kill himself.

I don't know why he did this and I guess I never will,' said 51-year-old Anna from her home just off Northshore Drive in Knoxville.

Refuting earlier press reports that her husband had killed himself over money worries, Mrs McReynold's said that her husband had been working three jobs around the time of his death.

'We weren't having finance problems.' said Mrs McReynolds.

'He was working in a kitchen, he delivered newspapers and worked for local Catholic charities.'

Indicating that her husband had been upset when the family learnt that their two boys would not be receiving financial aid for high school, Mrs McReynolds said that they had recieved this information in March.

'He wasn't obsessed with things like that,' said Mrs McReynolds when asked how concerned the family finances had made her husband.

Phoning 911 around 11 a.m Mrs McReynolds informed police that her husband had immolated himself in front of her.

Her two boys stayed with a relative last night following the death of their father.
