Breast Feeding
#1
What the fuck is wrong with people? Why would you breast feed a 4 year old? The kid has teeth, can walk, talk, and eat solid food. To me it's just wrong. It seems incestuous somehow. I was just reading on another board about this and I cannot believe how long some women breast feed. Once the kid starts getting teeth, it's time to stop. Certainly when the kid can eat regular food and walks and talks. I just cannot imagine a 4 year old sucking at my boob. I couldn't post this opinion on that board of I would have my ass handed to me. LOL

I've heard of women breast feeding kids until their 7 or 8. It disgusts me to no end.

And what the fuck is wrong with the fathers for letting this go on? Assuming there is a father. I've seen this shit on talk shows and they look like decent, middle class women that would be married.

And while were on the subject, and I will get in trouble for this I suppose, but I don't want to see any women whipping out their tit to breast feed babies in public either. If you have to work after having a baby, you need to pump it for daycare anyways, so why can't you pump it before you go to the fucking Mall.

That's my opinion as a woman and I'm sticking to it. No offence to the wee ones.

Well Ramsey, as a matter of fact, I had this exact same argument with the women in my mommy group a couple of years ago (maybe a bit longer, since I don't think my son was born yet). It turned out that I had to eat my words a little, since I argued that it 'wasn't natural' for a child to be breastfed past a year of age, and that was pushing it.

The women went on to prove to me, beyond a shadow of doubt, that not only is it natural, it's damned healthy for little ones to be breastfed until they are AT LEAST 2 years old, as supported by several medical/health associations, much research which is easily available online and even interspecies comparisons. Up until a year or so ago, I held that although I had to concede about the 2yr span, that anything past that was getting a little gross.

Now, here I am. My son turned two in March and he still nurses. Mostly for his nap and at night, but sometimes still during the day as well. I had vowed to myself that he would be weaned before he was two and I swear, every single time I seriously started the weaning process, he got sick. I don't think it's related in any way, but at least twice in the last six months, the fact that he still nurses has saved him from being hospitalized.

Not only is breastmilk still very high in nutrition, calcium and healthy fats for their growing mind and bodies, but it continues to help their immune system develop. In fact, human breastmilk has many incredible properties which have barely been studied to this point. It can even be used as an antibacterial agent.

He won't be nursing much longer, but I certainly don't feel 'bad' for allowing him to do so this long. I'm happy that I was able to provide this for him and only hope that it helps to give him some small advantage. There are so many perils in this world, I can't help but feel good about any help I have been able to provide him with.

And no doubt, this is my personal invitation to being severely mocked. ::finger::

That's the way infants are supposed to be fed. I believe in a little decorum, but I have nursed in public when my son was an infant. Sometimes I would take him into a restroom, sometimes I would just use a loose cover, but why should a person even feel it is necessary to go to those lengths?

It isn't always practical or even possible to pump enough milk to feed your child before going out and some little ones (like my son for instance) refused to take a bottle. Would you suggest simply letting the infants go hungry? It happens that breastfed babies have to nurse much more often than formula fed babies, since breastmilk is absorbed by their system more quickly. A formula-fed baby can go several hours between feedings when they are little, but a nursing baby has to be fed about every 1-2 hours. I'm sure if you had to sit in a waiting room with a screaming hungry infant, you would be begging the mother to just let the baby nurse.

I don't know about Ramsey's forum, but the place I used to go was hardly 'badass', more like 'stupidass' for the most part. They were mostly conservative uptight zealots with twinky-dinky disney brains. I did make a few good friends there though, who are still good friends to this day. We talk almost daily but I haven't been to the mommy forums in probably a year. The last few times I did go there, it was to flame people.

They are not badasses and the forum is private.

Syber, while I think 2 is a bit old for BF'ing. 4 is just way beyond. I read that after 6 months breast milk no longer enhances the immune systems of babies. I am not debating the benefits of breast milk at all. But seriously? If the kid can talk and eat solid foods, he doesn't need to be breast feeding. My opinion. You do what you feel is best for your child. I will say that both of my boys are perfectly healthy and always have been and they were bottle fed from day one.

My kids both got formula and they are healthier than my friends kids who breastfed, of course they smoked and chugged Mountain dews all day. Formula doesnt have nicotine and soda in it.

When the kid can walk up to you and say he's hungry then I think it's time to get him off the tit. Unless you live in a third world country where there is no other food.

I'm sure you're not trying to educate me on how to feed an infant. I breast fed both of my kids for the first year of their lives. I managed to do it discretely 22 years ago, and pump enough milk to be able to go to work every day. It can be done, without a whole lot of effort.

So you say you don't think trying to ween your son is related to why he is getting sick, but then you say nursing him saved him from being hospitalized when he got sick....I'm confused.

I never suggested letting a baby go hungry. And of course I've sat in a waiting room, plenty of times, with plenty of screaming babies. If you're talking about a waiting room for a pediatrician, I would fully expect to see mothers breastfeeding, as I have been one of those mothers.

Actually I was. Your post sounded as if you were unaware of the needs of a nursing infant.

Perhaps for you, but not for everyone. Some women begin to dry up when they start pumping during the day instead of nursing because the pump isn't nearly as efficient as a nursing baby is. Personally, it wouldn't have worked for me. I wasn't able to pump enough for a feeding and pumping was always very painful for me.

Quote:So you say you don't think trying to ween your son is related to why he is getting sick, but then you say nursing him saved him from being hospitalized when he got sick....I'm confused.
I'm sorry I wasn't more clear. He got pretty sick a couple of times and would not eat or drink, only nurse. The hospital staff said that if it were not for his nursing, he would have been hospitalized and put on an IV.

Why would it be more acceptable to nurse a baby in a waiting room than elsewhere in public? Personally, I always chose to cover myself when I had to nurse my son in a public place, but more power to those women who do not feel the need to do so. Why should they be ashamed of feeding their baby? Why do people think that a nursing calf or foal is 'adorable', but a nursing infant is offensive? It's ridiculous.
