"Punk" and "nigger" don't mean the same thing. Whether some people hear (or say) "punk" and equate it to "nigger", aside from some acquaintances of MS, IDK.
Anyway, back to the case of George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin:
Had George said "fucking niggers, these assholes always get away" to describe Trayvon Martin, I think the case would have been presented differently and perceived differently by many. I also think that chances of it being classified as a hate crime/civil rights violation would have been higher. These are only my opinions.
But, Zimmerman didn't say that, and the prosecution didn't claim that's what he meant.
I did some more reading as to the speeches and sentiments being expressed by protesters in various cities. I didn't come across any claiming that George meant "nigger" when he called Trayvon a "punk", though some believe that George profiled (in their opinions, racially profiled or stereotyped) Trayvon as being up to no good because Trayvon was black. They believe that George wouldn't have followed and killed Trayvon Martin otherwise and that justice was not served. Lots of criticism regarding how the prosecution handled the case as well.

The rallies across 100 cities are peaceful, from what I've seen in media coverage here. They were organized by Al Sharpton's National Action Network and there are set speakers voicing their opinions to very large crowds. I saw some coverage from the rally in NYC with Sybrina Fulton, Miami with Tracy Martin, and one in Detroit with local leaders and preachers.
The two main calls to action that continue to be voiced at rallies/protests:
1. A federal civil rights violation charge against Zimmerman. I think they're going to be disappointed on that one; the evidence doesn't support such a charge.
2. A review of Stand Your Ground laws with subsequent revisions making it more difficult for killers to get away with murder (saw many protesters carrying signs reading, "George Zimmerman is a murderer").
The laws are determined by the states, not federally. Some states have already seen proposed SYG laws fail in the wake of the Trayvon Martin killing. Some states may review their existing SYG laws and revise them; remains to be seen. Florida officials, however, don't appear to be considering changes on that front - based on recent statements from state officials.
Also, lots of talk about how black children aren't safe from profilers like Zimmerman under such laws, nor are they protected by the justice system under such laws.

They were asked if it was more likely they would stop/search a dude if he was young and black and they more or less said “well yeah probably”.

I'm just reporting the gist of the public protesters' speeches made at this weekend's rallies.
As far as Obama and Holder's statements from last week, I think they needed to say something.
I kinda wish they'd have limited public statements to a reiteration of their sorrow for the family's loss, respect for the verdict, acknowledgement that the potential civil rights case is being reviewed... Making personal statements (especially while confirming possible federal charges are being considered) is unwise and rubs me the wrong way, whether their sentiments are sincere or primarily motivated by politics.
But, others have different opinions about Obama and Holder making such comments, obviously...

This is something I noticed several years ago, on the cover page of todays Sun Sentinel there 7 stories about blacks killing blacks.
1 about white cops killing 1 black and 4 or 5 white folks going to jail.
There is never a day without at least 1 on the cover page usually above the fold.

Dear Attorney General Holder,
We are writing to clearly state the ACLU’s position on whether or not the Department of Justice (DOJ) should consider bringing federal civil rights or hate crimes charges as a result of the state court acquittal in the George Zimmerman case. Even though the Supreme Court permits a federal prosecution following a state prosecution, the ACLU believes the Double Jeopardy Clause of the Constitution protects someone from being prosecuted in another court for charges arising from the same transaction. A jury found Zimmerman not guilty, and that should be the end of the criminal case.
However, there are still actions the federal government can take to help communities like Sanford, Florida to ensure tragedies similar to Trayvon Martin’s untimely death do not happen again, including preventing widespread racial profiling. Although the George Zimmerman case did not involve a law enforcement officer, many other shootings of unarmed Black men around the country have. In 1999, 22 year old Guinea immigrant Amadou Ahmed Diallo was fatally shot 41 times by white New York police officers. Sean Bell was a 23-year-old African American who was shot 50 times and killed by New York City police when leaving his bachelor party in 2003. In 2005, New Orleans police officers shot six unarmed civilians, two of whom died, near the Danziger Bridge in the days after Hurricane Katrina. More recently, 22-year-old Oscar Grant, an African American, was shot in the back and killed by Oakland transit police on New Year’s morning in 2009 after getting off the BART train. These cases are painful illustrations of the need for the Department to prioritize issuing strengthened guidance to law enforcement on racial profiling and excessive force.
Furthermore, the Department can also help provide training to the community to help end the pervasive practice of racial profiling. In anticipation of the verdict in the Zimmerman case, the Department’s Community Relations Service should be commended for quickly arriving in Sanford to assist the community with the aftermath of the decision. Many wounds need to be healed in Sanford and DOJ should continue to assist the community by providing training and by working with the community to close this sad chapter in its history. DOJ should also commit itself to providing training and technical assistance to state prosecutors involved in cases where race is seen as a factor. Finally, Congress should immediately pass the End Racial Profiling Act.
We realize that the alleged conduct of private citizens like George Zimmerman is beyond
the scope of the End Racial Profiling Act and the Department of Justice Guidance Regarding the
Use of Race by Federal Law Enforcement Agencies. But average citizens can be influenced by
the conduct of law enforcement, and problematic practices by public officials can increase the
likelihood of bad judgment and actions by private actors. Further, the killing of Trayvon Martin
has touched off a range of emotions across the country and is another harsh reminder that police
actions can be motivated by racial bias.

I'm almost certain one of our members (user) swore tubbie said "coon" on one of the recordings.
The prosecution was remiss to define and clarify "punk" outside of a racial connotation.
They wanted and needed the emotion that racial hatred brings for a conviction because the law was on Zimmerman's side.
