A casual acquaintance of mine told me her kid had a "straight edge" tattoo inked on his arm. Skater kid . . . pleasant, polite, studious . . . and sports a creepy raped-goth meets old school hip-hop look.

She seemed puzzled when I questioned if tattooing didn't run contrary to the whole "body is your temple" thing.

Apparently. I think its quite refreshing having a whole sub culture of young people with no interest in getting high or wasted.

You think the Methodists are bad, my grandpa converted from a Nazarene preacher to a Methodist one just so his bald ass could wear a toupee in peace.
Under the Nazarene rules even ordering a pizza or going to a movie theater is a sin because they associate it with drunk, promiscuous teenagers. I'm not one to think you can blame your life on anyone but yourself, but with parents like that I can see how they were a minor, contributing factor in my dad's fucked up life.

I don't know anything about him taking individuals out for meals but he does a shitload of charity work for drug addicts and the homeless. He used to be a heroin addict himself when he was young and he's passionate about drug addicts getting help instead of being ignored labelled and stereotyped.
His humour used to be quite cruel sometimes but he's mellowed and become very metaphysical about life. He's the kind of bloke I would definitely have as a guest at a dream dinner party because he's funny and articulate and intelligent.
Just keep him off the booze and heroin and he'd be fine.
