WEST VALLEY CITY -- Police continue searching the Utah desert as they investigate the disappearance of a West Valley City mother two years ago.
West Valley City police Sgt. Mike Powell says searchers will spend Monday scouring a remote area around Topaz Mountain in central Utah. Investigators likely will search a 10- to 12-mile area west of the mountain using ATVs, horses and cadaver dogs.
Police say an "extensive increase" is underway in the number of searchers helping in the effort.

September 19, 2011 (SPRINGFIELD, Ill.) (WLS) -- Former Bolingbrook police officer Drew Peterson must stay behind bars while he fights charges he murdered his third wife.
The Illinois Supreme Court denied Peterson's request Monday.
Peterson has been in jail since 2009 awaiting the start of his trial in the death of Kathleen Savio.
The trial has been put on hold while prosecutors appeal a ruling that bars them from introducing hearsay statements.
Peterson is also a key suspect in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy.

WEST VALLEY CITY -- The father-in-law of a missing West Valley City woman is in jail in Washington State, but not in connection with her disappearance.
Steven Powell was arrested Thursday and faces more than a dozen charges of voyeurism and possession of child pornography.
Authorities say this arrest is not related to the search for Susan Powell, but the images were discovered because of a search at Powell's home in August. Investigators seized multiple computers from the home.
West Valley police now say they found thousands of images of women being videotaped without their knowledge. One of those women was Susan Powell. Police also identified several minors.
Ed Troyer, spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff's Office said, "Through the investigation we also found hundreds and thousands of pictures of little girls and people at parks, close ups of body part. So we have a whole bunch of victims out there who don't even know they're victims."
Susan's husband, Josh, and their two young boys had been living at Steven Powell's home. The boys have been removed from the home and are now in protective custody.

The images included shots of two girls who were as young as 8 and 10 years old at the time of the recording, the prosecutor said.
Pierce County Sheriff’s officials determined those girls lived next door to Steven Powell from June 2006 to August 2007, according to the statement.
His bedroom window faces the side of the victims’ residence and the line of sight matches the camera angle seen in the photos, Lindquist said.
Troyer told the newspaper that the photos focused on victims’ "intimate parts" and were taken in public or through windows with a telephoto lens, the newspaper reported. Some of the victims were photographed nude, the newspaper reported.

The father of Josh Powell and father-in-law of missing West Valley mother Susan Cox Powell was arrested at his home in Puyallup, Wash., Thursday night. He was booked into the Pierce County Jail on charges of 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possession of materials of minors engaged in explicit conduct.

Regarding the child porn:
Some of the images and videos saved to compact disc were organized into subfolders, including "Taking bath-1," "Taking bath-2," and "Open window in back house." In these subfolders there are images of two girls who were as young as eight and ten-years-old at the time of the recording. The girls are unclothed and taking a bath, using the toilet, and getting dressed or undressed. In many of the images the photographer zooms in on the girls' breasts, buttocks, and genital areas.
When contacted by law enforcement, the mother of the victims identified her daughters in the images. She explained that she sometimes left the blinds open in the upstairs due to the heat. Crying, she said that she never thought someone would be watching and photographing her daughters.

Missing mom's father seeks custody of her children
According to WBNSTV in Ohio, Chuck Cox, Susan's father, has filed for custody of the Powell boys. I hope he gets it quickly.
The boys are currently in protective custody (bet they are being interviewed; hope they are receiving counselling)...

In addition to the images of the victims, detectives found images of Steven Powell himself that are "sexual in nature and include images of him naked, images of his genitals, and images of him masturbating," charging documents state.
The charges against Steven Powell are felonies with a standard maximum penalty upon conviction of five years in prison.
Sherry Hill, a spokeswoman for the Washington Department of Social and Health Services, said the 4 and 6-year-old sons of Susan and Josh Powell, who have been living in the home of Steven Powell along with their father, have been taken into state custody.
Chuck and Judy Cox asked for custody of their grandsons during a Friday morning court hearing, Hill said. A second court hearing has been set for Wednesday.
"I think its a sad day for the Powell family," Chuck Cox said following the hearing. "I’m relieved the children are no longer in that household."
Chuck Cox said he and his wife will now do everything they can to get custody of the boys.

PUYALLUP, Wash. — The parents of missing West Valley mother Susan Cox Powell for the first time have directly accused Josh Powell in connection with their daughter's disappearance.
"We have been reluctant to acknowledge what has been the feeling of many others and that is simply that our daughter is dead. Whether our daughter is being held against her will somewhere or whether she is dead, we both believe the father, Josh Powell, is directly responsible for her disappearance," Chuck and Judy Cox said in court documents filed Friday.
Josh Powell, the husband of missing Utah woman Susan Powell, is surrounded by reporters as he leaves a Pierce County courtroom, Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, in Tacoma, Wash. Powell was attending a hearing regarding a motion for custody of his two children that was filed by his father-in-law, Chuck Cox.
There has been a flurry of activity in the Susan Powell case over the past 24 hours — including the arrest of Susan's father-in-law, Steven Powell, several court hearings related to Susan Powell's childhood diaries and Chuck Cox filing for custody of his grandchildren.
Friday, in Pierce County, Chuck Cox, Susan's father, requested custody of Susan and Josh's two sons, ages 6 and 4, in a nearly 90-page document in which he now directly accuses Josh Powell of his daughter's disappearance.
"We have prepared this custody petition in anticipation of Josh being arrested for the disappearance, kidnapping/murder of our daughter. Obviously, we are hoping against hope and sending out many prayers that our daughter is somehow, someway found alive," the Coxes said in their petition filed Friday.
The children are currently in protective custody in Washington.
Josh Powell did not say a word to reporters as he left the courthouse Friday.

neighbors watched investigators pull up in unmarked vehicles about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, with lights flashing. They quickly loaded Steve Powell into a squad car. At the same time, they placed the two sons of missing West Valley mother, Susan Cox Powell, into another squad car. The two young boys had backpacks in tow.
Meanwhile, their father, Josh Powell, stood in the driveway with his sister, Alina. For nearly a half-hour after investigators left, the two remained there, with Josh Powell visibly angry and upset as he repeatedly kicked a van parked in their driveway.

The hearing in Pierce County Superior Court, originally scheduled for Wednesday, began at 9 a.m. PST and lasted until 12:30 p.m. PST. Judge Katherine J. Nelson at that time took a recess to review filings in the case and said she would reconvene Wednesday.
