Did you know the dog on top of the RCA building in NYC is a pit bull? The original dog for the company was a pit but in recent years they changed it to a JRT to be politically correct. The sitting JRT used now looks like the old style pit it still is on the roof.

Because the original breeding was not to kill.
When they decided dog fighting was the sport du jour then they started mutating the breed to kill other dogs. Never were they bred to kill humans but with poor breeding, poor genetics, bad training and people who shouldn't own them, the result is a great breed destroyed.

Based on what?

We 'play god' all the time. We 'create' new breeds by deliberating interbreeding different breeds. We control the gene pools by selecting what traits we wish to cultivate in breeding, and which traits we wish to breed out. We 'play god' in so many ways that it's countless. To say that we shouldn't play god in this instance is hypocritical. A breed which has outlived its usefulness and is now more of a danger than a benefit should be bred out.

I think that should be true of all dogs, period. I'm not sure how much it would help, though I'm sure it would help some. I used to help people train their dogs for the Canine Good Citizen all the time. It was always a fun class. Unfortunately, I still don't think it would control the problem, since the people who want aggressive dogs for macho bullshit reasons, and the people who neglect their dogs, would probably find ways to get around it all.
