I feel biased. I know I walked home from the little mom & pop store when I was young like that. I feel like it is abnormal for a kid that age to run into traffic like that. It's a very sad thing, but I think the parents have been over-charged.

I think the parents were over-charged. On one hand I wouldn’t allow my seven year old out of the front yard, but that’s just me. On the other I used to walk to the corner store across a busy street when I was seven years old. Not only that, but with a note from my mother to allow me to buy her cigarettes and a six pack of beer.

Yeah. And the 7 y/o was with his 10 y/o brother who I absolutely DON’T blame but I understand a parent not being able to predict worst case scenarios. “Latch key kids” used to be pretty normalized (and I’m sure there are still parents that can’t afford after school childcare/supervision for their kids). I let my two start walking to school periodically when they were 8-9 but then again, pretty safe neighborhood, they weren’t crossing freaking major roads or anything.

Unless there’s some indication that these parents were generally (or otherwise) negligent, I feel like it’s a big overreach.

They weren’t allowed to attend the kid’s funeral. WTF?

I hate slippery slopes but this sounds like one (absent other details). I mean if ur kid is kidnapped waiting at a school bus stop are u negligent because u weren’t there with them waiting for the bus?

I don’t like it.
