Prosecutors and defense attorneys began interviewing potential jurors this morning to hear the case of an East Toledo man charged with the murders of a Springfield Township couple.

Samuel Williams, 24, of 1626 Kelsey Ave., is charged with two counts of aggravated murder, one count of aggravated burglary, and two counts of kidnapping stemming from the Jan. 31, 2011 asphyxiation deaths of Lisa Straub, 20, and her boyfriend, Johnny Clarke, 21. If convicted, Mr. Williams could face the death penalty.

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Dean Mandros cautioned the pool of 82 prospective jurors to avoid news reports about both cases and to refrain from discussing either case with anyone. Because jurors were to be questioned individually about their views on the death penalty, Judge Mandros divided the pool into groups and gave each group a time to report back to court.

Judge Mandros said the court anticipates holding opening statements in the Williams case Friday with the first witness to be called to testify on Monday. The trial is to coincide with the trial of co-defendant Cameo Pettaway, 22, of 133 Essex St., who faces the same charges. Jury selection for Mr. Pettaway’s case is expected to begin this afternoon.

very very very upset , that they DROPPED the death penalty against Cameo . Im very very disappointed in that . They dont know him in these streets , he may get paid , but def not a Mentally Challenged person , i dont think Mentally challenged people , sell drugs , beat women , or murder people . that is very sad , and i am SO upset with the System.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The death penalty specification has been dropped in a murder suspect's trial Tuesday.

A judge decided Cameo Pettaway did not meet the state's standards because of mental issues. By law, individuals who are mentally challenged cannot face the death penalty.

Pettaway still faces life in prison if convicted.

Jury selection has now begun for his trial and opening arguments could begin later this week.

Pettaway and Samuel Williams are charged with the double murder of Johnny Clarke and Lisa Straub in Springfield Township back in January 2011. The couple was found inside the home of Straub's parents with their hands bound with duct tape and heads covered with bags

Ditto to the above! I was shocked by this statement from Toledo Blade "Mr. Fabian took issue with Ms. Cassel's findings, saying she had not conducted an appropriate IQ test, that her test results were invalid because she read the questions for Mr. Pettaway, and that the Court Diagnostic and Treatment Center was not qualified to do the type of evaluation required in a case like this." The whole thing is appalling!

That is just crazy , i can only imagine whats going on in Maytee's brain. IMO i think it would be messed up if Samuel Williams gets Death Penalty , and Cameo walks away with life , hopefully No parole. I would Kill myself if i was him , i could not live like that .
ive seen both sides of this, but i was very shocked with the outcome of today , and i actually feel for Maytee today .

The judge mentioned Tuesday that Johnny Clark's mother is banned from his courtroom. Court documents state Clark's mother cannot conduct herself with any self control and may cause problems during the course of the trial.
