Bakersfield couple arrested for amputating their dog's leg after car accident

Bakersfield, California - Alberto Castaneda, 51 and Maria Banuelus, 59 have been arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty Friday after authorities found their one-year-old black Labrador retriever mix with his hind leg crudely amputated. Authorities believe the couple operated on the dog themselves to avoid paying a veterinarian after the dog had been hit by a car.
The Kern County Animal Control found the dog tied to a post at the couple's Bakerfield home located on the 3000 block of Weedpatch Highway. The dog was dehydrated, and his leg was infected and crawling with maggots.
Veterinarians were able to save the dog now named Onyx by his rescuers after his incredible strength to survive such an egregious ordeal.
"No animal, no person, and no living creature deserves to be abused in the manner that this animal was abused," stated Dr. Cynthia Martinez, one of Onyx's veterinarians.
Authorities believe that the couple operated on Onyx with no medications and no anesthetic. The dog suffered from a double pelvis fracture, dislocated hip and injured back leg when his owners allegedly decided to treat and operate on the dog themselves.

"Just imagine a 70 pound dog getting hit with the force to be able to break both sides of his pelvis and that's very painful and not getting the care; just horrendous to think about the pain," continued Dr. Martinez.
Onyx will still need more surgery, but is in stable although critical condition, and is resting comfortably. Friends of the Kern Animal Shelters Foundation are raising funds for Onyx's additional surgery estimated to be $8000. If you would like to donate to help Onyx please click here for more information or send in a donation to Friends Foundation, PO Box 11494, Bakersfield, CA 93389.
