The defense concedes Leila’s blood is on the knife, but argues that hardly puts the weapon in Isiah’s hands. They contend DNA evidence pinpoints whom genetic material belongs to but doesn’t inform when or how it arrived there. The Defense argues that an intruder killed Leila.
The defense suggests the knife would simply need to be around blood to absorb it in such a fashion and doesn’t prove it’s the weapon.
The defense argues law enforcement misrepresented forensic evidence against the then 12-year-old Isiah and used coercive methods in hopes of extracting a confession.

If found guilty, he would be incarcerated until age 23. Since he's being tried as a juvenile, that's the longest sentence possible in California.
