Based on their comments, plenty of people on the left still hate some of McCain's positions and decisions (Iraq, Palin, etc), but always appreciated his service in Vietnam, his commitment to veterans, and his commitment to accessible health care.
Some extremists on the left did hate him as a person as well, I don't doubt that.
Most of the hateful comments I've seen about McCain are coming from extreme Trump supporters though. They go so far as to call him a traitor for voting against the repeal of Obamacare and speaking his mind about Trump (who'd questioned McCain's 'war hero' status for years, even before Trump's presidential candidacy).
Anyway, I thought McCain was okay too. Better than most of the assholes occupying congressional seats.
