I grew up 2 locks from the train tracks so if could be done around a train we probably did it. Coins on the tracks are hard to find after a train's wheels run them over. If you can find them afterwards, they were pretty cool.
Trains were our transportation from one side of our town to the other. Most memorable times was hopping a ride from our area [the flats] to the fancy side of town where there was a swimming pool and a dairy queen next to it. Problem was that was the point the train started building speed and if you didn't bail soon enough you were in for either a hard landing or long ride to the next town, about 40 miles. Another ride was in 1975 when I went to the Sha na na & Dr Hook concert. At least that was downtown, and the train never picked up speed.
Train derailments were a common place thing and would disrupt traffic for hours if not days.
So yes dodging or driving through [those old arms sure did dent up a pickup] the arms was pretty lame compared to the stuff we did.
