I need to know why Kohberger confessed if he isn't the murderer. This is a young man who will spend the rest of his life in prison.

So far I've found out that Thompson sent the FBI to "interview" the two most important defense witnesses, both of whom changed their testimony as a result. To have that happen when you're going to trial for capital murder with a public defender is devastating. Additionally, Taylor had filed very solid motions, almost all of which were denied, not unlike what happened in the Karen Read trials, so Kohberger had no realistic chance of winning.
