I used to work in the place that tested vehicles for emissions-we tested diesel vehicles also. I always remember hearing that the particles get stuck to your lungs and never leaves-unlike other fumes which will stay in your body for a time but then disipate once your in fresh air.
The test for diesels was particulate matter. A monitor would get hooked to thier tailpipe and they would push the throttle just like in the video and the meter would measure the thickness of the smoke.
