In 1852, Frederick Douglass gave a speech in Rochester NY that to this day is still considered one of his most poignant and moving speeches that he'd ever given.
He spoke of how to the Amerikkan Slave(as we were referred to at that time), the celebration of the New World's independence was a sham, a hollow mockery to their own prayers & hymns.
I remember when I was young, we'd always have fireworks. The men in my family always had them around. What I don't remember was actually celebrating the 4th until after my grandmother passed. Never knew why until I got old enough to learn the full story. To this day, I do not celebrate certain things that the rest of this nation does, and the 4th is one of them.
