Reducing the debt/closing the deficit...
#1
What are your thoughts? There are so many ideas being floated by both parties...changing medicare, raising the age for social security, letting the tax cuts expire for those earning over $250k, cutting oil company subsidies...and on and on. Thoughts?

And specifically, what do you think about this proposal? Are military benefit packages sacrosanct?

WASHINGTON -- A military built for fighting wars is looking more and more like a health care entitlement program.

Costs of the program that provides health coverage to some 10 million active-duty personnel, retirees, reservists and their families have jumped from $19 billion in 2001 to $53 billion in the Pentagon's latest budget request.

Desperate to cut spending in Washington's time of fiscal austerity, President Obama has proposed increasing the fees for working-age retirees in the decades-old health program, known as TRICARE. After years of resisting proposed increases for the military men and women who sacrificed for a nation, budget-conscious lawmakers suddenly are poised to make them pay a bit more for their health care, though not on the president's terms.

The current fees, unchanged in 11 years, are $230 a year for an individual and $460 for a family. That's far less than what civilian federal workers pay for health care, about $5,000 a year, and what most other people in the U.S. pay.

I don't have a clue, user. Smiley_emoticons_slash

I do know that if wealthy people are not getting any tax breaks you won't see them investing their money in ways that will create jobs or in any manner that will help the economy.

Duchess, what do you think about the military health care proposal? Aren't you paying something like $10-15k per year? Military personnel, $460 per year for a family? If you read further in the article, Obama is suggesting adding just $2.50-$4.00 a month initially. Everyone seems to be alright with that. The sticky part seems to be adjustments in future years.

Eighteen thousand dollars a year. I would be overjoyed to pay even five times what a military family does.

injuries during combat (u.s. engagement) should be covered... military that fuck themselves up while recreating (e.g. dirtbiking, waterskiing, snow skiing, etc.) on their own personal time SHOULD NOT. Yes, I've known a few that milked the system like that and the government should say 'too fucking bad, so sad, pay for it yourself, fucktard'

Life long 'veterans benies' should also only be given to combat veterans. The bullshit of giving every single person who was ever in the military full benefits at veterans hospitals for life is a crock. Veteran's are NOT created equally...

Ya' know what kills me? It just occurred to me that it would be just like our stupid leaders NOT to even pass the $2.50-$4.00 a month portion of the bill because they can't agree on the adjustments for following years. They pile so much shit in to one bill...why not just separate this crap out? 10 million people times $2.50-$4.00 a month...that's a start at least. Jesus. I could SO see that happening (i.e., NOTHING happening).

Take the money that you would spend for insurance put it in the bank and if you need a procedure go to Asia or India and get it done. A flat rate.

No one is saying we don't need the military but put this in perspective homeboy.

I am paying more for my "socialised" eurotrash healthcare through national insurance contributions than an individual is paying in the US military.

$230 a year? in my fucking dreams!

why is it when government screws the pooch all they can think about is cutting medicare and social security?

We will never pay our debt as long as we stay as a consumer nation, we have got to get back to supplying the world with what we make instead of buying what everyone else makes, this is why I have such a hard time with us being such a big part of the global economy, we are almost all in on the buying side.
Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

There should be incentive for employers to keep their manufacturing business in the states instead of sending the jobs overseas.

Bump for Cracker. You referenced this in your other post (the increase for military healthcare). Your thoughts?

I am checking out the VA pages now. I need to know how many new hospitals were built, etc., before I can offer an educated opinion.

I do see that Obama now uses our military hospital resources (Navy floating hospitals) for other countries like Haiti. That has to be included in the cost/reasoning.
