The parent's relationship with their child is not any of our business nor is it the teacher's unless it's actual child abuse. Not allowing your kid to change their name isn't child abuse. Her job is to go by the legal name on her classroom list, not a completely different one. Her job is also to assure there is no bullying in her classroom. If the student doesn't like it then give them a hall pass to take it up with the office and the parents. It's none of her business past that.

It’s fucking neglectful if you have no clue that your child named “John” goes to school and says they want to be called “Wisteria” there.
How the hell are responsible/involved parents surprised by this shit?

It’s fucking pathetic if the people who learn first about your child’s gender struggles…are teachers.

Are you just assuming that the parents didn't already know about the kid's gender issues? Perhaps they do know and don't approve of it until the kid is an adult and can make that life changing decision with an adult mind? What is it anyone's business except for the parent's?

If the parents knew about it they should have been in touch with the school and teacher and said “even though Jenny wants to be called Joe, we want you to call HER Jenny, no matter how ugly it gets for her”.
Then if the teacher had disregarded those wishes I suppose firing them would be appropriate.
You couldn’t pay me enough to be a teacher.

My friend is a first grade teacher and a kid stabbed her with a pencil, she really had to refrain from calling him a little bastard lol.
