This is why my fish cooking expertise is fabulous.

Meanwhile one of our boats broke down today. I got to drive while the captains were back looking at the engines. We were only delayed by 12 hour due to a faulty turbo charger.

Eleven hundred men went into the water that day, three hundred and sixteen came out. The sharks took the rest...

How did you like that? Would you want to do it again?

RE: Tuna fishing - MirahM - 10-02-2021

Yes, its my dream job.
Drove today also. But today was the larger slower boat.

...and you got some more experience today! Isn't that great! Now that they see you can handle it, they will give you more & more opportunities. I have no idea what it entails, but they obviously feel you can be trusted with the wheel.

It may not be a ompletely sustainable career for me in this area, but it definitely would be fun. There is a bit about the job that is monotonous, where my current position has me interacting with people more, but still I'd take driving a boat any day.

Did you have a compass in front of you? I've driven ships and they usually have one right there. You stay on the bearing 12 or another deg that gets you there. it is fun and functional. Port/ Starboard gets used. I remember driving a Destroyer a few times.  Blowing-kisses It is fun and deep. They trusted lil ole me.

use - "steering" the boat or better still "piloting" the boat; seamen will look more favorably on your skill set. the engine is turning the screws that drive or propel the vessel; you are just controlling the direction the vessel is going with the rudder.

There is a compass. I don't see the captains using it. We are on a 50 mile lake, while cruising up and back we are never more than 1 mile from shore.

The only times of poor visibility is during a storm/ overcast day or if smoke is covering the lake.

Well it was a rocky ride. I guess the trip was dependent on a 2000.00 gift from work. In the beginning of the week it didn't look good but with a little wrangling it was fixed so..........

Friday I get up @ 2am and go to work @ 3:30 we leave at 4am to go to Ipswich Mass. about 1.5 hrs away to depart @ 6am. 6 burly dudes on a boat Tuna fishing. We are going for the 100 lbs Tuna not the 700 lbs ones fuck that. It takes 2 hrs to land a 100lbs one. anyways I'm told it takes a few guys to do that. I'm fairly burly in upper strength so most of them are hoping I do a lot of reeling. There is also a 6ft 5 guy that I hope can do some of the work. Otherwise the remaining 4 are wimpy bitches that may last an hr at the mast when pushed.

I'm hoping for 3 100 lbs fish or at least 10-12 Halibut or Cod if the Tuna fails.

Yes I will take plenty of pictures for vicarious living throughout the ordeal. Just don't expect any puking for fighting for 2 hrs with a Goddamn fish. As I know may happen.

10 hrs on the water so I get back at 4-5 pm then drive home with my sack. I'm actually bringing my harmonica and binoculars because its 3 hrs just getting to the fishing spot.

Well, our buddy Maggot is at sea.

I wonder if he's the type to get sea sick in those big, rolling waves.

I never get seasick. Just got back after getting up today at 2am. Its 9:30 now. Thoroughly exhausting day. I learned how to fish for Tuna using a kite and helped bring up 15 lobster bales. I will do a full report some time tomorrow, but now I really have to get some sleep. It was grueling! Long assed drive and 10 hrs out that turned into 12hrs. later gators..............smallish boat with only 6 of us.

Woo hoo! I cannot wait to hear more!

Today I learned how to tie the bow and I piloted the boat for an extended period of time. They even left me alone in the wheelhouse twice!
This boat had a larger compass than the other boat. I will upload a pic.

Wow, keep that up, and we're going to have to call you "Captain"!  59
